Impact Stories
In a powerful testament to the impact of innovation and compassion, Tom Drury, former CEO of Hydrofera LLC, shares a moving story of how a team’s swift action and a groundbreaking wound care solution saved a young girl from a double amputation.
“At 5:30 p.m., on a Friday afternoon, a grief-stricken father called us with a desperate plea. His three-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with unhealable wounds, and doctors had scheduled her for a double amputation. In a last-ditch effort, he had heard about Hydrofera Blue and asked if we could help.
Without hesitation, we mobilized. A local clinical team was contacted, product was prepared for immediate shipment, and our FedEx driver—just minutes from completing his route—turned around to retrieve the package.
With the shipment on its way for Saturday delivery, I called the father to share our plan. At first, he responded coldly, assuming he had been ignored earlier. But as I explained the effort underway, his tone shifted to gratitude.
A few weeks later, he called back—his daughter’s legs were healing, and the scheduled amputations were called off. Years later, the family traveled from California to personally thank the Hydrofera team, expressing their deep appreciation for “saving their daughter.”
This moment—when a company and a dedicated clinical community came together to change the course of a child’s life—remains at the heart of why we do what we do.
Over the years, we’ve heard countless similar stories, each reaffirming our mission. Hydrofera was built on the dedication of passionate caregivers who always put their patients first.
In the summer of 2016, during my brief attempt at retirement, the family visited again, repeating their gratitude: ‘You saved our daughter and our family.’ Reflecting on those words, I’ve come to realize something profound—it was really the other way around.”
